Friday’s team result not withstanding, Jace Washburn had a splendid season opening week.
At Greenwood yesterday Washburn was 2-for-3 with singles in both the third (shown) and fifth innings of a 14-3 loss. It was his third multiple hit day of the week.
Hitting in the cleanup spot, Washburn is a collective 7-for-9 at the plate, a .778 average, with a double that bumps the slugging percentage to .889.
The senior has scored four runs scored and has two runs batted in. He also has one sacrifice to his credit.
In the department where smaller numbers matter, Washburn has an unblemished 0.00 earned run average, which is not due to unearned runs being eliminated from the computation, but because he has not allowed any runs at all.
Washburn (2-0) allowed one hit over four shutout innings Monday in a run rule win over Clarksville and threw three more shutout and hitless innings – retiring nine straight – and got the win in relief against Hackett on Thursday.
That is a combined seven innings with one hit allowed with 10 strike outs and just two walks.
Also turning in solid opening weeks at the plate were Cutler Haller with a .444 average (4-for-9) with 2 RBI, Jeremiah Shaw hitting .375 (3-for-8) with 3 RBI, and Casey Carter at .333 (3-for-9) with 3 RBI.
Rhett Nietert also has a team tying high 3 RBI, including one in Greenwood, and has made two appearances on the mound, both in relief and a start.
The schedule this week calls for three more games with Cameron, Okla. visiting on Monday, a trip to Dardanelle Tuesday, and a conference road game at Mansfield Friday.
According to iwasatthegame.com, Cameron has won 10 baseball state titles, the most recent being in 1998, which was the sixth straight for the Yellow Jackets. Two of the titles are for fall seasons.
In 2025 the Yellow Jackets are 3-0 after a beating both Heavener, Ok., 11-3, and Lincoln, 12-0, on Friday. Dardanelle posted a 1-2 opening week and Mansfield, now a conference opponent, dropped three games last week.
