With over half of his squad playing in their first tournament, head coach Jake Fennell’s Booneville Bearcat golf team finished second in the first sports event of the season Tuesday.

The Bearcats carded a 134 team score with freshmen accounting for each of the three necessary scores in the 9-hole event hosted by Paris at Little Creek Country Club in Ratcliff.

Sophomore Kass DuPree (show) would lead the way with a round of 42, just two strokes off the medalist score, which was posted by a Subiaco golfer.

Freshman Toby Weaver shot a 44 and Chase Posey, also a freshman, shot a 48 to complete the team score.

The Bearcats were six shots behind Charleston and five shots ahead of third place Mountainburg among the five teams with a minimum of three players.

Charleston’s team score came from a round of 42 and two rounds of 43. Mountainburg had a 43, a 46, and a 50 for its score.

Also playing for the Bearcats were Parker Smith, Karson Tillery, Drake Brackney, Casey Carter, and Tayden Washburn.

In girls play there were four schools represented, though the Lady Bearcats had just one golfer and did not figure into the team standing.

That golfer was also a freshmen, Alycin Pearcy, who shot a 51, just six strokes off the medalist pace set by a Mountainburg golfer, who led her team to a 148 and first place finish, beating Waldron by 12 strokes.
