With David Martinez throwing up video game numbers of 5 carries for 169 yards and 3 touchdowns, the Seventh Grade Bearcats topped Cedarville 20-6 at Bearcat Stadium Thursday evening.
The Bearcats (3-2, 2-0 Conference 3A-1) had to first survive a shaky start after a fumble on their first play. They did so by forcing Cedarville to turn the ball over on downs.
Martinez, Braxtin Walker, and Kash Lyle made stops to force a fourth down where the Pirates threw an incomplete pass.
Deacon Jones then ripped off 48 yards in two carries – Lunsford ran for 68 on 5 carries – to move the Bearcats to the Pirate 17-yard line. Martinez took over from there with the touchdown.
A bobbled snap kept it 6-0.
After the Bearcats forced a simulated punt Jagger Jobb picked up three yards then turned to Martinez who went 60 yards to make it 12-0 with 4:13 left in the first half.
The Bearcats got another chance before the intermission and Martinez ran 46 yards on to get the Bearcats across midfield. Alijah Pearcy then threw to Jackson Cain for 17 but a sack and fumble ended the half.
The second half was a penalty fest with both teams penalized six times.
The Bearcats would eventually build on their lead on a 41 yard run by Martinez – on a fourth-and-23 – and Pearcy, after an illegal substitution penalty, added a 2-point conversion run from the 8 to make it 20-0.
Cedarville got on the scoreboard on an 84-yard run with 3:01 to play.
The Bearcats will next play at Hackett next Thursday.
