Officially, Ayden Rhinehart carried the football two times Thursday night in Greenland. He scored three touchdowns and a 2-point conversion in the Junior High Bearcats’ 40-6 win over the Pirates.
Rhinehart’s touchdown runs covered 17 (shown) and 66 yards and he would also pick up a fumble after a sack and return it for a touchdown. It is his second fumble return for a touchdown this season.
Greenland started the game with an onside kick and, though they made no secret it was forthcoming, was able to recover the ball after it bounced off a Bearcat.
The Pirates managed one first down before a snap got loose and Asher Penny recovered for the Bearcats at midfield.
Cooper Smithson then carried on three straight downs to get the ball to the Pirate 19 and Brackney scored from there for a 6-0 lead.
The Bearcats (7-0, 4-0 Conference 3A-1) added a 2-point conversion run but it was negated by a holding penalty – one of thee conversions wiped out by a flag.
Brackney picked off a pass and took it back to the Pirate 12 to set the Bearcats up for another quick score. After a false start Rhinehart went 17 yards for his first score and it was 12-0 with 47 seconds left in the opening quarter.
Smithson returned a Pirate punt to the 1-yard line to set up Brackney’s second touchdown and it was 20-0 – Edwin Garcia added the conversion run with 5:03 to play in the first half.
On what would be his only carry, Garcia would made it 26-0 with a 69-yard scoring run with 2:21 left in the half.
Rhinehart tacked on a 2-point conversion run after the fumble return touchdown, to make it 34-0. Trevor Swaim was responsible for the sack, with a little help from Colt Whitehouse, that caused the fumble Rhinehart collected.
Greenland started the second half by picking up one first down but a Chase Posey sack helped induce a punt.
Rhinehart then went 66 yards for a touchdown on his only carry of the night to make it 40-0 with 4:04 to go in the third quarter, starting the running clock sportsmanship rule.
The Bearcats will be at home next week facing West Fork in what is currently scheduled as the only game of the night.
