Bearcat quarterback Rhett Nietert did not score a touchdown in the first five games this season. He scored two in the first quarter Friday against Greenland.
The second run by Nietert, covering 50 yards, made it 21-0. It was 42-0 by halftime and the Bearcats (4-2, 3-0) coasted to a 42-7 win over the Pirates (1-5, 1-2) and their Bearcat alum head coach, Brock May.
Nietert’s second touchdown evened the turnover to touchdown ratio for the Bearcats at three as two possessions were ended by fumbles and a third ended before it started due to a muffed punt Greenland was also able to recover.
Each of the fumbles gave the Pirates the ball on the Bearcat side of midfield, but on each occasion the Bearcat defense was able to keep Greenland at bay.
Twice it was a fourth down incomplete pass that gave the Bearcats the ball back and the third time it was a Lathen Shaffer/Clint Osborn sack on third down and one by Braxton Hubble on fourth that ended the scoring threat.
For Hubble it was one of his three sacks on the night.
One play after the second Pirate turnover on downs Brody Chambers rumbled 63 yards for a touchdown to make it 6-0 with 7:43 to play in the quarter.
It would be 35-0 by the 8:00 mark of the second quarter.
Nietert’s 14-yard scoring run came after a Pirate punt and Hayden Daniel ran for a 2-point conversion to make it 14-0.
The 50-yard run by Nietert came after the Hubble sack that offset the muffed punt and it was 21-0 with 1:32 left in the first quarter.
The second quarter saw a pair of Conner Droemer touchdown runs and one by Callen Montalvo.
Droemer first went 59 yards for a touchdown on a one-play drive to make it 28-0 – Oliver Loaeza hit four straight point after kicks after a misfire on his first attempt.
Droemer then scored on a run of 10 yards one play after Nietert hooked up with Jasper Meeker for 40 yards and it was 35-0 with 8:00 remaining in the first half.
After Sadler Miller came up with a fumble recovery to give the ball back to the Bearcats Montalvo would score on a run of 19 yards to make it 42-0 3:45 before halftime.
The Bearcats had just one second half possession, which ended when Loaeza was just short on a 47-yard field goal try.
Greenland would get on the board on a fourth down completion from the Bearcat 15 with just over two minutes to play.
They did so after overcoming sacks by Abraham Dominguez and Blade Petchinik – there were six sacks on the night – early on in what would be an 80-yard drive.
The Bearcats will be on the road next Friday visiting West Fork, who picked up their first conference win Friday, topping Cedarville 32-28.
