Holding Charleston to a single field goal for three quarters the Booneville Junior High Bearcats rolled to a 39-25 win in a Conference 3A-4 game in Charleston Monday.

The Bearcats (9-3, 3-0) scored the first 7 points of the game but led just 9-5 after a quarter as Charleston hit 5-of-6 free throws.

The 6th Tiger point also came at the free throw line but by then it was 20-6 on the way to a 24-6 lead before the first field goal by the home team.

Drake Brackney had scored 11 points for the Bearcats at that point and he would lead all players with 15.

The third quarter saw more of the same as Charleston scored four times at the free throw line and the Bearcats continued to pull away with Chase Posey hitting a 3 to wrap up a 7 point night.

Breckyn Denton (shown in a game last semester) closed the quarter with a basket that made it 36-12.

Charleston was able to trim the deficit to as few as 13 points in the final quarter.

Lady Bearcats 33 Charleston 29

The Lady Bearcats won for the 10th time – against just one defeat – after turning a 5-point halftime lead into one of 14 through three quarters.

In the decisive quarter it was a team effort with all five starters scoring in succession.

Alycin Pearcy, who started the half with three fouls scored 14 seconds into the third quarter and Tatum Brackney hit a shot 25 second later.

After a Charleston 3, Sophie Shaffer answered, Trinity Martinez scored after a steal, and a free throw from Evelyn Rogers, who like Pearcy had 3 first half fouls, made it 24-15.

Rogers scored again on a feed from Martinez, Pearcy hit a 3 and Brackney scored for the second time in the quarter to make it 31-17.

Rogers ran her point total to 13 early in the final quarter to make it 33-20 but Charleston, who already had one in the quarter and two in the half, would hit three times from beyond the arc to cut it to 33-29 with 1:28 to go.

Both teams will be back in action Thursday when they host Paris.
