Tempi Terry rebounded an Anna Ferguson missed free throw, bounced the ball one time and banked home a game winner as the buzzer sounded to beat Cedarville 47-46 Monday night at Bearcat Gymnasium.
Going to the final quarter Cedarville had led the entire way with the exception of ties at 3 and 26. After the third quarter tie at 26, Cedarville built a 36-31 lead going to the fourth.
Ferguson, who had scored just 2 points to that point, hit a pair of free throws, ended a three plus minute scoring drought with a 3 and drove inside for a basket to make it 41-40 with 2:53 to play.
Terry hit two free throws with 2:23 to go and the Lady Bearcats led for the first time, 42-41. Two more from Terry made it 44-41 but Cedarville got a 3 on the ensuing possession and it was 44-44 with 1:39 to go.
Cedarville took the lead with 18 second to go but fouled Ferguson with 2.5 seconds left as she drove to try to tie the game. The senior hit the first free throw, giving her 8 points in the quarter and 10 in the game.
Terry’s rebound putback – the second buzzer beater over the Lady Pirates this season – gave her 17 on the night.
Cedarville 51 Bearcats 43
Down as many as 14 in the first half, the Bearcats got within 31-27 with 3:05 to go in the third quarter.
Cedarville stretched its lead back to 10 twice before the third quarter ended only to have the Bearcats to storm back to tie it at 42-42 on Sadler Miller’s only points of the night with 3:10 to play.
Nick Widener and Tayden Washburn combined to score 22 second half points to lead the comeback. Widener finished the night with 17 and Washburn totaled 16.
The Pirates retook the lead with 2:14 to play and closed the game on a 9-1 run.
Up next for both teams are makeup games with Lamar at Bearcat Gymnasium on Wednesday with the girls tipping off at 5 p.m.
