The Booneville Bearcats snapped a 13-game losing streak Thursday night with a 61-48 win at Cossatot River.
In the midst of a 9-0 first quarter run, the Bearcats took a 13-11 lead on a Dakota Fonseca basket on an assist from freshman Drake Brackney, the first of six assists in Brackney's varsity debut.
Tayden Washburn (shown earlier in the week) closed the first half with a pair of baskets that gave the Bearcats an 11- and ultimately a 10-point lead going into the half, 31-21.
That gave Washburn 15 first half points and he was on the way to a career high 26.
The lead would grow to as many as 16 at 45-29 with 2:14 to play in the third quarter on another Washburn basket that came on an assist from Hayden Daniel.
Cossatot scored the next 10 and was within 45-39 with 6:19 to play in the game.
Reed Brackney scored on an assist from Nick Widener and Widener hit a 3 on an assist from Drake Brackney and the lead was back to double digits and would be no less than 10 the rest of the way.
Besides Washburn Drake Brackeny was in double figures with 11 points and Widener hit three 3s for 9 points.
Cossatot River 45 Lady Bearcats 37
Cossatot broke the fifth tie of the game with a pair of free throws at the 2:20 mark of the third quarter and kept the lead the rest of the night.
The free throws that put Cossatot ahead started a 7-0 run and the Lady Bearcats, who had led or been in a tie for all but 12 seconds to that point, were unable to draw even again.
One of Haylee Taylor’s five 3-pointers cut it back to 3 with six minutes to play.
A conventional three point play, a rebound and putback basket and free throws were enough to keep the Lady Bearcats at bay.
Cossatot shot 22 free throws on the night, converting 14 opportunities. The Lady Bearcats were 2-of-4 at the stripe.
Both teams will close out the regular season with senior night games against Lavaca tonight.
