The 2021-2022 high school sports calendar tees off Monday. Literally.
The Bearcat and Lady Cat golf teams will host a number of schools at Cherokee Creek Country Club at 4 p.m. today for a 9-hole tournament of the year to start competitive athletics for the school year.
It is the first of four regular season scheduled tournaments at Cherokee Creek. The course will also host the practice round for the district tournament and the district tournament to close out the year.
The Bearcat and Lady Cat golf teams are coached by Jake Fennell. There are 12 golfers – eight boys and four girls – who are expected to play.
Hitting the links for the boys are Brett Welling, Brooks Herrera and Rylen Ray, who were on the 2020 team that finished as the district runner-up and earned a state berth. Welling and Herrera are juniors and Ray is a sophomore.
Joining the team are junior Peyton Tatum along with freshmen Noah Harrel, Jace Washburn, Macolen Tillery, and Colt Cobb.
The girls team, which also finished as the district runner-up in 2020 and earned a state berth, returns senior Joleigh Tate and junior Leigh Swint, along with seniors Brooke Turner and Hayley Lunsford.
The Bearcats and Lady Cats are also scheduled to play in Waldron on Wednesday and have another date at home next Monday.
