With Brooke Turner showing marked improvement the Booneville Lady Cats golf team beat Charleston by a single stroke in Waldron on Tuesday.
Turner (pictured), who took up the sport this year as a senior, shot a 51 at the Waldron Country Club which, with rounds of 40 by Leigh Swint and 41 by Joleigh Tate, gave the Lady Cats a team score of 132, one less than the Lady Tigers.
Swint's round was the lowest of the day and Tate's was the second lowest.
It is the squad's second tournament win of the year.
“She is starting to really pick it up,” head coach Jake Fennell said of Turner. “Watching her play now compared to back in July when she started is like night and day. (Hayley) Lunsford too.”
Lunsford, who shot a 54 Tuesday, figured in the scoring of the Lady Cats' first tournament win.
Waldron was also represented on the course yesterday.
With preparations well underway for the season opening junior high and senior high Bearcat football seasons, the Bearcat golf team was limited to just two players in Waldron, Macolen Tillery and Colt Cobb who had rounds of 49 and 53.
Waldron won the tournament followed by Charleston and Paris was also represented.
The Bearcats easily won their home match at Cherokee Creek Country Club last Thursday, Aug. 19, with a team score of 114 as both Brooks Herrera and Brett Welling shot a 1-over 37 and Rylen Ray shot a 40.
Peyton Tatum came in with a 48, Tillery with a 49m and Cobb with a 56 to complete the Bearcat entries.
Charleston was 15 strokes back and Paris was 35 back. Mansfield was also represented on the course.
With the volleyball team engaged in a preseason scrimmage the Lady Cats were limited to two golfers so there was no team score. Swint shot a 46 and Turner a 54.
