A Trevor Karow fumble recovery at the Bearcat 18-yard line ended the first quarter of Thursday’s season opening loss to Dardanelle by the Junior High Bearcats.
The Bearcats then drove 82 yards in 14 plays with Hunter Warren scoring from the 2 to make it a 7-6 game. The big play of the drive was a 30-yard completion from Jace Washburn to chase Shelton.
Damari Poole was responsible for 27 rushing yards on the drive before being forced out of the game due to losing his helmet on a play. Warren carried the next two downs and got the touchdown.
It was still 7-6 at the half, then Conner Droemer returned the kickoff 34 yards to the Dardanelle 46 yard-line. From there the Bearcats had a pair of penalties to thwart any chance at taking the lead.
Another penalty on a punt improved Dardanelle’s field position and the Sand Lizards got a long touchdown run to go up 14-6.
Aiden Carter recovered an onside kick attempt and the Bearcats had their second double digit play drive of the game, scoring 11 plays later on a 6-yard run by Conner Lentz to make it 14-12 but an attempt to tie it with a two-point conversion failed.
Dardanelle went up 21-12 with 2:30 to play on a 49-yard run then scored again on an interception return just 1:02 later.
The rest of the way saw Carter and Droemer run for 49 and 39 yards. Washburn was the leader in the game for the Bearcats with 56 yards and Poole added 48 with Lentz running for 39.
Running 45 plays to just 20, the Bearcats actually outgained the Sand Lizards 291-270 on the night.
Poole, Lentz, and Seth Wilson were the leading tacklers.
