Locked in a 2-2 set match Booneville Lady Bearcat captain came out of a time out and promptly served an ace that left her team one point away from a match win.

Charleston scored the next two points but Karmen Kent smashed a ball off to the left of a Lady Tiger that could only be deflected out of bounds and the Lady Bearcats and head coach Bailey Stringer won the third-place game of the District 3A-4 West tournament.

Making the win remarkable is that the Lady Bearcats were playing for the fourth time in four days in the tournament, the only team forced to do so. Coming in as the third seed Charleston was playing for the third straight day.

Charleston had also won both meetings this season, both by set counts of 3-1.

The Lady Bearcats had also played only one five set match all season and it came in the season opener at Mansfield.

Charleston also won both the first and third sets but the Lady Bearcats never quit.

After taking a 1-0 lead, the Lady Tigers also scored the first six points of the second set before a serve into the net.

The Lady Bearcats battled back with kills by Karmen Kent, Joleigh Tate, and Hayley Lunsford the went in front on a kill by Hayley Roberts, inspiring a time out by the Lady Tigers.

Kylie Lunsford, a seldom used sophomore sister of the captain who was forced into action at several points in the tournament, threw in a key ace as the Lady Bearcats extended the lead.

Tate also had a kill down the stretch of the set that evened the score at 1-1.

Charleston won the third set despite kills from Roberts, Kent, Laney Parrish, and two each from Hayley Lunsford and Tate.

Down the stretch of the fourth set Tate had three big kills – she had five in the set, matching the five from Hayley Lunsford.

Katelyn Spain also dropped in an ace and Abby O’Bar had a kill in a series of points that saw the Lady Bearcats take their first lead in the set.

The Lady Bearcats raced to a 10-4 lead in the quest for 15 to win the final set and kept Charleston at bay the rest of the way.

Already assured of a state berth, the win improves the Lady Bearcats to a 3-seed and sends them into a match against Baptist Prep, a 2-seed, at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 26. The state tournament is being held in Paris.
