The Booneville Bearcats had nine straight days off after opening the season with an overtime win.
The layoff didn’t appear to have a negative effect as they easily handled Western Yell County, 50-23 in Havana Thursday night.
Played first on the twin-bill with the Lady Bearcats, the win spoiled the Wolverine homecoming.
The Bearcats (2-0) scored the first five points of the game on a basket near the rim by Evan Escobedo and a 3 from Raiden Ferguson (shown) and never trailed.
After a free throw got the Wolverines on the scoreboard, a free throw by Escobedo and a basket by Colter Fisher made it 8-1 before the first Wolverine field goal.
Western Yell would have only one other field goal the entire first half and the then five-point deficit at 8-3 was as close as it would get .
Fisher, who scored twice more while the lead grew to 14-3 still in the first quarter would finish the night with a game-high 16 points.
By halftime it was 24-7 and the lead reached 22 after a basket bay London Lee with 5:23 left in the third quarter.
The Bearcats then went 4:40 without a point but Western Yell could trim the lead to just 18.
Escobedo and Fisher scored the first 12 points of the final quarter for the Bearcats before setting down for the night.
Escobedo finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
One of Escobedo’s fourth quarter baskets came on one of C.J. Johnson’s seven assists in the game.
