The Lady Bearcats went on a 16-2 run in 3:08 of the first half and led the rest of the way in a 54-46 win over Western Yell County in Havana Thursday.

Brook Turner drained a 3 with 13 seconds left in the opening quarter to give the Lady Bearcats a 15-14 lead and they never relinquished it.

That isn’t to say that there weren’t tense moments before finishing off a Booneville sweep to ruin Western Yell's homecoming night.

While building a 28-16 lead the Lady Bearcats (2-0) got two 3s from Heaven Sanchez and another one from Turner as well as buckets from Joleigh Tate and Turner.

But, foul problems began to mount. Western Yell was in the bonus at the 1:58 mark of the first quarter and the Lady Wolverines scored five times from the free throw line after getting to the double bonus eventually cutting the lead to 30-25.

Linley Garrett was the first Lady Bearcat at the free throw line 19 seconds before halftime. She converted one of two chance and it was 31-25.

A pair of Sanchez baskets in a 13 second span late in the third quarter gave the Lady Bearcats a 40-29 lead but over the final 1:56 of the quarter WYC got back within 40-35.

Sanchez led the Lady Bearcats with 15 points to go with five steals, five rebounds, and four assists.

Ten seconds into the final quarter Western Yell cut it to 40-37 with free throws but the Lady Bearcats responded with a free throw by Leigh Swint – her first point of the night – a basket from Byrum and another from Turner on an assist from Byrum made it 45-37.

Turner was also in double figures for the Lady Bearcats with 15 points and she had seven rebounds.

Byrum would hit a 3 after a pair of Lady Wolverine free throws trimmed the lead to 46-41 with 4:50 to play.

Byrum (shown), who did not play in the opener, had five rebounds and four assists to go with her five fourth quarter points.

Still, Western Yell wouldn’t go away, cutting the 49-41 lead to 49-46 with 1:30 to play.

A key basket by Sanchez, on one of Swint’s five assists, and three free throws from Swint in the final half minute as Western Yell fouled to stop the clock kept the Lady Wolverines at bay.
