After having to settle for second place in a District 3A-4 tournament for three straight years, head coach Jake Fennell's Booneville Bearcat golf team broke through today to win the tournament.

Held on the Bearcats’ home course of Cherokee Creek Country Club, the Bearcats shot a team score of 254 to win the tournament by 13 strokes over Danville.

Brooks Herrera, a senior who was on the three runner-up teams, led the way with a 79, which tied for the low round of the day.

Herrera birdied the final hole to force his way into what was a two way tie that became one of three golfers.

Herrera, along with golfers from Danville and Two Rivers played a playoff to determine the individual medalist with the plaque going to the Danville player with a birdie on the playoff hole.

Completing the Bearcat team score was Brett Welling, also a senior, with an 87, and sophomore Jace Washburn shooting an 88.

Rylen Ray was also on the course for the Bearcats and shot a 90.

Danville’s 267 team score came from the 79, along with rounds of 93 and 95. The Little Johns were three strokes clear of Charleston at 270.

In the girls division it was only Leigh Swint representing the Lady Bearcats. Swint shot an 89, which tied for the second lowest round of the day.

Charleston won the team title with a score of 270 with Atkins taking second, a distant 62 strokes back.

The girls Class 3A state tournament is next Tuesday, September 27 at Turkey Mountain in Salem. The boys will also play in Salem, on Tuesday, October 4.
