The Booneville Junior High Bearcats ended the game on a 12-0 run to claim a 20-18 season opening win over Western Yell County Tuesday night at Bearcat Gymnasium.
Ultimately, the Bearcats won the game at the free throw line. It was one of two by Dakota Fonseca (shown) that gave the Bearcats a 19-18 lead with 35.1 seconds to go.
Hayden Wiley blocked a shot but was whistled for a foul trying to run the ball down with 16.8 to play but Western Yell could not convert at the free throw line and Conner Droemer, with his team leading eighth point, hit the first of two with 9.1 seconds remaining to make it 20-18.
After a time out, Droemer missed on a second attempt, but a WYC 3 attempt to win it came off the rim.
Western Yell had led 18-8 late in the third quarter before a 3 by Wiley and a free throw by Droemer got the Bearcats within 18-12 after three quarters.
Wiley had another basket in the 12-0 run and Droemer added two as well, with the second tying the game at 18.
Lady Bearcats 39 WYC 23
The Junior High Lady Bearcats also opened the season with a win, starting what would be a four game sweep, with a 39-23 win that was never close.
The Lady Bearcats scored the first nine points of the night with Haylee Taylor accounting for five of them, including her first of four 3s.
Taylor and Makinley Ensey both hit 3s in the second quarter and it was 17-4 at the half. Taylor had two more 3s in the third quarter and finished with a team high 14 points.
Tempi Terry was consistent throughout the night and scored 10 points for the Lady Bearcats.
