For the second straight year the Lady Bearcats and Mayflower played a nail-biter, unfortunately this one went to the Lady Eagles, 3-2.
The Lady Bearcats opened the seventh down 3-2 but loaded the bases on a couple of Mayflower errors and a walk but a line drive double play ended the game.
That spoiled a multiple extra base hit day by Layla Byrum, including a home run leading off the sixth inning to make it 3-2. It was the first of the year for the Lady Bearcats (5-3).
Leigh Swint followed the homer with her second hit of the day and Lexi Franklin also singled but the next three hitters were retired without advancing the runners.
Byrum also doubled home Ellie Smith, who also had two hits on the day, in the third to give the Lady Bearcats a 1-0 lead but would leave two runners in scoring position.
Mayflower used a couple of walks, a double, a ground ball and an error to score three times in the fourth.
Franklin suffered the loss allowing just two earned runs and striking out 12.
The Lady Bearcats were scheduled to travel to Two Rivers today but the game has been postponed.
The Lady Bearcats next game is now against Mansfield at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Billy Kiersey Baseball/Softball Complex to open the Raymond Turner Memorial Tournament.
