The Booneville Bearcats wrapped up an unbeaten conference season with an 11-3 win over Subiaco at the Billy Kiersey Baseball/Softball Complex Monday.
They did so with Brooks Herrera leading off the game with a home run and driving in a second run, and throwing a complete game in which he allowed three hits and struck out nine to run his record to 5-2.
But it was a two-out run scoring single by Dylan Todd that got Herrera to the plate in what would be a five run fifth that was key for the Bearcats (14-4, 8-0).
Jace Washburn (2-for-4) led off the Bearcat fifth with a single after Subiaco had cut a 5-1 Bearcat to 5-3.
After there was one out Matt O’Bar drew a walk but both he and Washburn were still at first and second when Todd, playing second, came through with a single to score a run.
It wasn't Todd's only major contribution.
Herrera (2-for-2) drew a walk that filled the bases and O’Bar scored on a wild pitch with Dax Goff at the plate. Goff would single home another run and it was 8-3.
Goff stole both second and third and each time an errant throw cost the Trojans a run and it was 10-3.
Ry Ray led off the Bearcat sixth with a double, moved to third on a ground out by OBar, and scored on a deep fly ball by David Hicks to make it 11-3.
Herrera finished it on his 102nd pitch of the day, getting a ground ball to Ray at third.
Subiaco had struck first in the first scoring on a two-out error after having one runner cut down at the plate but Herrera led off the Bearcat first with a solo home run, his second home run of the year, both coming in the first at bat of a game.
It stayed 1-1 until the bottom of the third when Herrera led off with a single and Goff was hit by a pitch. A fielder’s choice retired Goff but a throwing error trying to complete a double play allowed Herrera to score to make it 2-1.
Todd would then play a big part in the lead growing to 5-1.
O’Bar singled to right leading off the fourth and Hicks walked to bring up Todd, who advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt (shown).
Herrera then lifted a fly ball with O’Bar tagging, but the ball was dropped. A ground ball out by Goff scored a run and made it 4-1 and Tatum singled home another run to make it 5-1.
Subiaco got two back on a hit batter and consecutive one-out doubles in the fifth but O’Bar snagged a line drive and a strikeout ended the inning.
The Bearcats are back in action today at Mansfield at 4:30.
