When the 2022-2023 school year began every coach in the Booneville School District’s athletic program was back in their exact same role.

Nobody retired. Nobody left the program. No role changes.

While it would not turn out that way – Chad Simpson ascended to the top spot in softball when Ronnie Denton stepped down just before the season – that will not be the case in August.

Since the final day of school, girls basketball coach Tim Goers has moved exclusively to the classroom opening up that position and earlier this week Whit Overton was announced as the new head coach at Mansfield.

In Goers case it ends his third stint as a Booneville head coach – twice with the boys before taking over the girls program, building the program, and leading them to back-to-back conference titles.

Overton, the head coach of the Bearcat junior high team as well as a senior high assistant is going home. A 2004 Mansfield graduate, all three of Overton’s junior high teams won conference titles and were a combined 24-5.

While a decision on who will be the junior high head coach is still pending, basketball in particular will have new faces on the bench as the search for both a girls head coach and boys assistant spot is underway.
