Brooks Herrera did a little bit of everything in the Arkansas High School Coaches Association All Star game Friday evening.
Playing for the West in the double header at Bear Field on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Herrera was flawless defensively, reached base twice, had a hit, and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
In the opener Herrera came into the game and recorded three fly ball outs in right field and fielded another ball that was sent into right center for a base hit.
In his only at bat in that game Herrera was at the plate four eight pitches, fouling off two of the first four, and two more after it was 2-2, before earning a free pass.
That was hardly unusual from the Bearcat leader in walks (18) during the recently completed season.
Herrera then stole second base but would be stranded in a game that would eventually end in a 5-5 tie. Herrera led the Bearcats with 25 steals during the 2023 season.
In the second game Herrera came up in the bottom of the sixth in a 3-3 game and lifted a sacrifice fly to score a go-ahead run.
Herrera drove in 27 for the 2023 Bearcats, including two via sacrifice flies.
He recorded the final out of the East seventh on a fly ball to right, but that came after the East had scored three times to go in front 6-4.
Herrera singled in the bottom of the inning and was at third with the tying run at second and winning run at first when the East recorded the final out of the night.
