Tennis Cats To Open Season, Start Busy Sports Week

Booneville School District | 8/28/2023

The sports week kicks off today with the season opener for the tennis Bearcats and Lady Bearcats as they visit Mulberry.

The season opener was originally set for last Monday but a match with Dardanelle was postponed to September 11 due to the heat. Tuesday’s scheduled match with Jessieville was also tentatively rescheduled for September 5.

Tennis coach Katelyn Holub will be taking seven girls and seven boys to today’s match, including defending district champion girls doubles team of Linley Garrett and Lexi Franklin.

Also on the 2023 roster are Angie Brown, Emma Ferguson, Mary Haynes, Harley Fitzjurls, and Raelynn Franklin.

The boys roster includes Noah Harrel, Aiden Carter, Daxton Bowman, Taylor Shaver, Gabriel Draper, Whitaker Kendall, and Wesley Fonseca.

The tennis Cats are scheduled to play at home for the first time Thursday against Atkins at 4 p.m.

Golf

As it turned out Bearcat golf coach Jake Fennell picked a great week to not have matches on the schedule as it was unlikely that any would have been played due to the heat.

That changes today when Bearcat golfers hit the links of their home course in a match set to start at 4 p.m.

In their most recent outing the Bearcats were third as a team in a home match on August 17. Bryce Eaves shot a 42, Noah Harrel a 43, and Colt Cobb a 52 and were the only golfers on the course for the Bearcats.

In girls division on the 17th, Kylie Lunsford led the way with a 50 and Anna Ferguson and Alisa Rogers figured into the team scoring.

Volleyball

Bearcat volleyball returns to action Tuesday against West Fork after picking up their first win of the season in straight set fashion in Waldron on Thursday by scores of 25-12, 25-20, 25-16

Libero Lillian Downs was credited with a team leading 14 digs with Ellie Smith one back at 13 and Farrah Stringer recorded nine.

Smith led the way with nine kills, with Lyddia Franklin one back at eight, and Kylie Lunsford had six.

On Tuesday of last week the Bearcats won the first set but dropped the next two before winning the fourth set to force a decisive fifth set which required extra play before Clarksville won it 17-15.

Downs had an unreal 42 digs in that match with Kaylee ray adding 25 and Franklin 17. Smith was the only Bearcat in double digits in kills with 12. Presley Walker had five and Franklin four.

The volleyball Bearcats also host Lincoln on Thursday. Both matches this week will be streamed live at ' target='_blank'>.

Football

Open on last Friday's week zero playing date, Bearcats open the 2023 season at Ozark on Friday.

The Seventh Grade Bearcats are also set to open their season on Thursday, also against Ozark, but at Bearcat Stadium. Kickoff is at 5:30 p.m.

The Junior High Bearcats are 1-0 after a 26-12 win at Perryville and will also take on Ozark Thursday at 7 p.m.

The seventh grade and junior high games will be streamed live at ' target='_blank'>.
