Down 22-0 to Class 6A Russellville Thursday night the Booneville Junior High Bearcats put together a scoring drive to start the second half then made a defensive stop to get the ball back.
The Bearcats (1-2) were unable to do further damage after the scoring drive, however, and fell to the Whirlwinds 29-6 to complete nonconference play.
The touchdown drive covered 10 plays, five of which saw Brody Chambers carry the football, and 58 yards. CAllen Montalvo (shown) had a 27-yard run during the drive on the way to a 7-yard touchdown run by Chambers.
Chambers led the way on the night with 15 carries for 67 yards.
The scoring drive was set up by Hayden Daniel’s 33 yard kickoff return to the Bearcat 42.
Following the touchdown, the Bearcat defense surrendered one first down then forced a punt.
From there the Bearcats managed one first down themselves before turning the ball over on downs at the Russellville 37 with 7:35 to play in the game.
The Whirlwinds scored on the next play and added a single point after to make it 29-6.
Daniel added another 21 yards in returns – he had 67 on three kickoff returns – and the Bearcats managed one first down before failing on another fourth down with 3:56 remaining.
The Whirlwinds and reached the Bearcat 8-yard line on the game’s opening possession but were stopped short on fourth down.
Russellville would take an 8-0 lead after the Bearcats fumbled the ball. Touchdowns at the 6:20 and 3:00 marks of the second quarter pushed the score to 22-0.
The Bearcats will have an open date next Thursday before opening 3A-1 play at Hackett on September 22.
