IT'S GAME DAY

It's Game Day

GLENN PARRISH

Booneville School District | 10/27/2023

The Bearcats need only to win tonight against Lavaca or next Friday against Cedarville to be the top seed from Conference 3A-1 in the Class 3A state playoffs. Of course wins on both nights means not sharing a title.

A conference title would be the sixth in a seven year period for the Bearcats and the third under head coach Doc Crowley.

While the series with Lavaca is completely lopsided, as you can see below, the Golden Arrows have scored 27 points in each of the last two meetings (64-27 in 2022 and 42-27 in 2015). Lavaca scored 33 points in the five previous meetings combined.

The series includes three two-year cycles when assigned to the same conference and one cycle (2008 and 2009) in which the schools met in week two for nonconference games. The 2008 game ended 21-13 and is the closest in the series.

TODAY IN BEARCAT FOOTBALL HISTORY: The Bearcats are 6-5 all time in games documented to have been played on October 27. There have been a couple of records set on October 27. On October 27, 1995 Jeremey Thomas became the first Bearcat to score 6 touchdowns in a game, doing so in a 53-29 win over Ozark. Thomas ran for 221 yards that night in Bearcat Stadium. Davin Hicks would score 6 against Dardanelle in 1997 and Anthony Napier scored 6 against Mena in 2011.

In 1978 the Bearcats scored 5 2-point conversions in a 46-6 win over Charleston to tie a since tied again record in successfully going for 2. The record had been set, ironically enough, seven seasons earlier in a game that was also 46-6 though the opponent was Mansfield. It was matched in a 59-26 playoff win over Hamburg in 2005.

NOTES: With Dax Goff having taken over the school rushing record every yard now will, obviously, raise the bar that much higher. His three straight 4 touchdown games is another record – actually back-to-back had never been done but Brandon Herrera and Dwight Ashley had both had a pair of 4 touchdown games in a three week span. Goff now has 67 career touchdowns. The record is 76 and is shared by Bryson May and Randon Ray. The completion to Dakota Mattson last week pushed the Bearcats over the 300-yard passing mark for the first time with Doc Crowley as head coach. The 64 points by the Bearcats against Lavaca last year is tied for the seventh most in a single game in school history and the combined 91 points is tied for the ninth most in a game.
