Linley Garrett tied a school record with six 3s and scored 21 points and Lexi Franklin scored a game high 24 for the Lady Bearcats in a 63-56 win over Acorn in their opening round game of the Bearcat Classic Monday night.
Franklin scored for the third time to give the Lady Bearcats an 8-3 lead three minutes into the game but by the time she scored again, Acorn had run off nine straight to take a lead.
After Franklin scored, Tempi Terry put in a pair of free throws and Franklin made it a 10-point quarter with a basket 0.3 seconds before the quarter ended and it was 14-12.
That run would be extended to 13-0 and it was 21-12 when Linley Garrett hit her first 3.
Garrett hit again from inside and outside the arc – both on assists from Franklin – before the half ended and the Lady Bearcats were in front 31-30 after two quarters.
In addition to her 21 points, Garrett had 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Bearcats.
The lead would change six times in the third quarter and there were ties at 35, 37, and 41 before a late 3 gave Acorn a 44-41 edge.
Garrett erased that with her first of three fourth quarter 3s. Her second 3 of the quarter cut an Acorn lead to 50-49 and the third gave the Lady Bearcats a lead they would not relinquish.
A conventional three point play by Franklin, a free throw by Garrett, and two by Franklin allowed the Lady Bearcats to maintain the lead.
Two free throws each by Angie Brown and Baylee Parnell put the Lady Tigers away.
The Lady Bearcats will face Prairie Grove at 6:40 Wednesday night for a berth in Saturday's finals.
