Cody Sum was something else Tuesday night in Ola as the Bearcats clubbed the Two Rivers Gators 61-27 in a Conference 3A-4 game.
Sum scored 25 points and had 20 rebounds in the win.
The Bearcats (8-4, 3-1)owned the boards. Dax Goff also contributed a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds and Nate Smith grabbed 11 rebounds as well.
Although the final margin was 34 points, the lead was no larger than 12 in the first half and it was as close as seven at 27-20 with 5:55 to go in the third quarter.
A Nate Smith basket made it nine and a Dax Goff free throw got it back to double digits at 30-20 but Two Rivers again got to within eight before Sum had three rebounds on one possession before finally scoring to make it 32-22.
Baskets by Jace Washburn and Noah Harrel had the lead at 14 with a minute left in the quarter but Two Rivers scored shortly after Harrel’s bucket.
That would be the Gators’ last field goal for over eight minutes – scoring the final points of the night in the final half minute.
A Washburn basket finished the third quarter scoring and started what would be a 25-1 run until that final basket.
Sum, whose multiple shot attempt basket in the third quarter had been his only points of the half, accounted for eight of the points in the run and was done for the night.
Dakota Mattson also had all eight of his points while the Bearcats were pulling away to compliment a four assist night.
Two Rivers scored the first four points of the night and actually led 4-0 when the Gators took a time out at the 4:25 mark of the opening quarter.
By the end of the quarter it was 11-4 as Sum had scored seven points.
Including six straight for his team Goff scored eight second quarter points and had 10 for the half. His final basket made it 27-15 before a late three got the Gators within single digits.
Girls
A JJ Keatts 3 pointer was the only basket of the second quarter by a Lady Bearcat. Two Rivers had scored 13 straight before the 3 by the senior and scored the next seven as well to open a commanding 29-11 halftime lead on the way to a 57-34 win.
As was the case for most of the opening quarter the Lady Bearcats were able to stay with the Lady Gators in the third quarter.
With Linley Garrett hitting her second and third 3s – she led the visitors with nine points – the Lady Bearcats actually cut the deficit by two in the quarter to 41-25.
Keatts would score five more fourth quarter and finish with eight.
Both teams are back in action at Danville on Friday, starting at 6 p.m.
