Linley Garrett hit her school record seventh 3 pointer of the game with 48 seconds to go Friday night in Danville to put away the Lady Little Johns in a 41-32 Lady Bearcat win.
The win gets the Lady Bearcats to 2-3 in Conference 3A-1 play.
The Bearcats (9-4) held off Danville 42-38 in the nightcap for their third straight Conference win and are tied for first with Hackett with both at 4-1. The Bearcats and Hornets are schedule to meet twice in eight days later this month.
One back in the win column in boys standings is Charleston at 3-1 and one back in the loss column is Cossatot River at 4-2.
Playing without an injured Lexi Franklin the Lady Bearcats were down 4-0 before a Tempi Terry basket got them on the board and a 3 by Garrett gave head coach Katelyn Holub’s team a lead over her alma mater.
Garrett would score her only non 3-point basket 43 seconds later to make it 7-4 and was on her way to 23 points and 8 rebounds. Terry finished with 10 points.
Though there were plenty of tense moments, the lead was never given back.
A pair of Angie Brown baskets gave the Lady Bearcats a 12-6 lead through a quarter and Garrett took it from there.
Brown hit a wide open Garrett for a 3 to start the second quarter scoring. She did it again after Danville closed within 15-10.
Before the intermission Brown found Garrett spotted up for 3 again and Ciara Smith did as well after a rebound and it was 24-16.
The lead grew to 27-16 on Garrett’s fifth 3 of the quarter and sixth of the night.
A 3 – not by Garrett but by JJ Keatts – gave the Lady Bearcats a 13-point lead at 32-19 but Danville was able to trim it to eight before a single Terry free throw made it 33-24 going to the final quarter.
With the Lady Bearcats having issues at the free throw line Danville was able to keep it a single digit deficit the rest of the way, eventually getting to within two possessions at 38-32 with 1:30 to play.
Scoreless in the second half to that point, Brown found Garrett alone again in front of the home bench and the senior drained the record breaking 3 for the eventual final.
Ironically, it was Brown's seventh assist.
Though she did not figure into the scoring, Baylee Parnell contributed with a game-high 15 rebounds.
Boys
Colter Fisher scored the first basket of the second half to give the Bearcats a 13-point lead at 27-14 but over the next six minutes the Little Johns erased nine of that and trailed just 32-28.
It was Fisher who pushed it back to 6 with a basket with 12 seconds left in the quarter.
Cody Sum made sure the Bearcats would not let the game get away. He scored inside for a 36-28 lead, hit a pair of free throws and scored again on a feed from Dakota Mattson to make it 40-32 with 2:08 to go.
Sum finished with a team high 15 points and he also grabbed seven rebounds.
Danville would score twice to get back within four but it was a Fisher basket that moved it back to six with 34 seconds left and a single Little John tally with :06 remaining would provide minimal damage.
Fisher finished with 11 points, his first double digit scoring effort of the season.
Jace Washburn had been the Bearcat leader in the first half. He scored the first four of the night and had nine by halftime in addition to a couple of assists. Washburn would also finish with 11 points.
The Bearcats led 10-5 through a quarter and 14-7 after a Fisher basket with 6:01 left in the first half.
A 3 by Washburn and a 3 by Fisher sandwiched a Sum basket and it was 22-11 with 49 seconds to play in the half before a Danville 3 would be answered by Mattson with one at the buzzer to make it 25-14 at the half.
Both teams were scheduled to be in action on Tuesday night at Cossatot River but school was cancelled earlier today leaving the status of the game in doubt.
The next scheduled games are Friday at Cedarville.
