Angie Brown handed out a school record 14 assists and added 11 points in a 56-48 win over Atkins Thursday night at Bearcat Gymnasium.
While Tempi Terry was most often the recipient, leading to her game-high 25 points, Terry actually accounted for just half of them.
Through three quarters the duo was lethal with Brown feeding Terry twice in the opening quarter, the second resulting in a 3-point play at cut an Atkins lead to 14-12.
With their fifth of what would be nine 3s Atkins led 17-12 going to the second when Brown realized Terry could not be guarded.
Brown and Terry combined three more times – Baylee Parnell also assisted Terry once – and the Lady Bearcats scored eight unanswered and took the lead, 20-17.
A pair of Lady Red Devil free throws cut the lead to one and Brown found Harley Fitzjurls for an easy basket.
On in relief of Anna Ferguson, who had an ankle issue in the first quarter, Fitzjurls provided 10 solid first half minutes and also logged crucial second half minutes while the Lady Bearcats were plagued with foul trouble.
Utilizing a screen from Terry, Brown closed the first half scoring to match the Lady Bearcats largest lead of the half at 30-24.
Brown and Terry connected twice in the first two minutes of the second half and the lead was again 6 but once Terry was soon in danger of being disqualified due to fouls, so Brown turned to Haylee Taylor, who had foul trouble herself.
Taylor would hit consecutive 3s within 30 seconds and the lead was eight. It grew to 11 by the end of the quarter as Brown scored, and assisted Makinley Ensey on a basket.
Ensey, a sophomore who had an assist of her own to Brown to start the final quarter, provided a full four minutes while Terry sat with four fouls.
In the meantime, Brown turned to Parnell inside and the senior, who had not scored, got two baskets, both with the shot clock winding down.
Taylor’s third 3 of the half, on Brown’s 14th assist of the night, made it 54-43 with 2:35 to play.
Terry was forced from the game with 1:06 to play and Atkins got within 54-48 with 42.3 seconds left.
Single free throws from Parnell and Brown closed it out.
On the road for the first time, the Lady Bearcats will be in action again on Monday at Ozark.
The senior high Bearcats, who did not play Thursday, will play a JV game in Ozark and continue to play only JV games until football season ends.
