Though they got there through different paths both the Booneville Junior High Bearcats and Junior High Lady Bearcats survived one possession games in which Cedarville had the multiple final shots Monday night.
The wins, 31-29, by the Lady Bearcats and 32-30 by the Bearcats mean both open Conference 3A-1 play 1-0.
For the Lady Bearcats to was Emma Fox scoring on an inbound feed from Kaity Green, Chole Walker scoring on a pass from Torie Nobles and the Lady Bearcats never trailing.
The lead was 10-2 through a quarter with Cedarville’s only points coming on free throws and it was 25-6 at the half.
Up 28-11 through three quarters the Lady Bearcats then had to withstand a late run that was stymied by Walker hitting a free throw to make it 30-26 with 1:32 to go.
Lexy Pearcy (shown in a game earlier this season) banked one in with 15.6 seconds to play to make it 31-29 and Cedarville proceeded to get off five shots, one of which was blocked by Fox.
In the boys game it was Cedarville leading 7-4 after one quarter but the Bearcats up 21-16 at the half.
The Pirates scored the first 6 points of the second half to go in front but an Aiden Rhinehart 3 gave the Bearcats a 24-22 lead and a Callen Montalvo
assist to Edwin Garcia made it 26-22.
Cedarville scored the next 5 to tie it at 28-28 but Drake Brackney scored with 1:38 to make it 30-28.
Although Brakney missed an and-one chance the would score again on an inbound pass with 23.5 seconds to go to make it 32-30.
Sadler Miller got a rebound of a miss in a Cedarville bid to retie it but after a pair of misses at the free throw line and a foul given the Bearcats were able to leave with a win.
That happened only after 0.5 seconds was put on the clock after another attempt to tie the game caromed out of bounds off a Bearcat.
The boys will next play against Subiaco on Friday night in a set that includes a JV senior high game to start the night at 4 p.m. and a senior high game to end the night.
Seventh Grade
Earlier in the evening the seventh grade Bearcats cruised to a 34-15 win and the seventh grade Lady Bearcats suffered an 18-15 loss.
