The Booneville Lady Bearcats used an 8-0 run just over two minutes late in the final quarter to put away Hackett 42-30 in the consolation bracket of the Bill Frye Invitational in Mansfield Monday.
If played as drawn, the Lady Bearcats, who are now 7-7, would have faced Cossatot River, who had beaten Hackett on Saturday, the same day the Lady Bearcats beat Heavener, Okla.
Cossatot, however, preferred to not face a conference opponent and all coaches agreed to an opponent so the Lady Bearcats took on the Lady Hornets for the second time this season rather than the Lady Eagles for the second time with another game on the schedule.
Hackett got a 3 pointer with 3:59 to play to draw within 34-27 of the Lady Bearcats, who had led since a Haylee Taylor 3 made it 5-3 with 6:18 to play in the first quarter.
The lead had been as large as 13, at 32-19 on another 3 by Taylor with 7:42 remaining before Hackett cut it to seven.
After that Tempi Terry (shown) scored a conventional three-point play, Taylor scored again and a shot clock buzzer beating 3 by Angie Brown made it 42-27 with 1:30 remaining.
It had been Baylee Parnell, who would co-lead the Lady Bearcats with Terry with 11 points, and Anna Ferguson who fueled the fast start that saw the Lady Bearcats lead 15-4 in the first quarter and 23-12 before halftime.
Hackett once got within six in the third quarter but a pair of free throws by Parnell between baskets by Brown and Raelynn Franklin had it a 12 point cushion again at 29-17.
Up next for the Lady Bearcats is a Conference 3A-1 game at Charleston on Tuesday.
Elkins 66 Bearcats 35
Noah Harrel scored 14 first half points and the Bearcats kept the Elks in their sights well into the third quarter before the Elks pulled away.
Back-to-back 3s by Harrel, tied the game at 6-6 in the first quarter and a Wesley Fonseca bucket tied it again at 12 early in the second quarter.
After Fonseca’s basket the Elks scored the next eight points and led the rest of the way.
However, the lead would be cut in half in the second quarter and would be trimmed to three on a basket by Dakota Mattson, who scored 10, with 6:01 to go in the third quarter and to four again at 30-26 on a Mattson 3.
It was a five point game with 3:06 left in the third quarter after a Fonseca free throw but Elkins scored the next 14 points to take full control.
The Bearcats (4-7) will be back in action in Conference 3A-1 play at Charleston on Tuesday.
